Podshow

If you listen to the Daily Source Code you will have heard on Monday 23rd's show that I'm no longer part of the Podshow network. This was instigating by me, and managment complied with my wish to leave.

I've noticed that there's been some speculation regarding this since it happened last Thursday (19th January), and I'm happy to verify the rumours - the tartanpodcast is 100% independant again.

What will this mean for the future of the tartanpodcast?

In simple terms, less podcasts per week. Part of my contract with Podshow meant producing 3 shows per week and while they'd given me written grace from producing the 3 shows, I still felt I had to pull my weight. After all, everyone else was. So I'd continued putting out as many shows as I could, factoring in the little things like earning a living and being a capable father and husband. But when I looked at the tartanpodcast with a critical eye I could see a reduction in quality and that was due to me spending little time preparing the podcast in advance.

Now that I'm in the same boat as people like Dan Klass, Lance Anderson, Scott Fletcher, Brad Pendegraph and many other independant podcasting-for-fun-with-the-hope-of-it-becoming-something-more-serious guys, I can podcast as and when I'm able to.

As an aside, and this is something I'm going to blog about soon, more than one person has commented to me that they didn't listen to all 3 shows per week anyway...

Another reason for my leaving Podshow's fold was the new distribution network. I'm not sure how much information about this network is already out in the 'wild' so I won't go into the mechanics of what I understand it to be. That being said, what I do know about it didn't fit in with the direction I want to take the tartanpodcast. So I felt it was prudent to leave before the network was up and running, with the tartanpodcast incorporated into it.

I realise this may mean I lose out on sponsorship deals and advertising $s, but that doesn't matter when compared with the feeling of excitment and optimism I have looking ahead to bringing you the 'all new' tartanpodcast.

What the format of the new tartanpodcast be?
It will - hopefully - be with you once a week, it'll be about 45 minutes long (I'd make it a neat 49 minutes if I thought PW Fenton would be in a position to play it on Sirius, but I can't foresee that happening), and will be more of a Scottish independant music magazine-style show. With the sad passing of the sleepy sunday show*, the all new tartanpodcast will be available for download on Sunday evenings (conditions apply..) so that you'll have it for your commute on Mondays. The first 10-15 minutes or so will be in keeping with the sleepy sunday show's ethos, so you'll still be hearing the best mellow and laid back music I can lay my hands on to break you into the working week. The rest of the all new show will be dedicated to the Scottish independant music scene, featuring in depth looks at the most exciting bands in Scotland, exploring different genres, regular pieces contributed by the bands themselves, interviews, gig guides, gig reviews and more.

I'm exciting about this development and I hope you'll stay subscribed and tell your friends to subscribe etc etc. I don't have the marketing clout of other podcasters and podcast distribution networks, I'm confident in the loyalty and support of you guys to stick with me and to spread the word.

Failte!

*Note; please trust me on this, the sleepy sunday show may not be coming out anymore, but the new format will make up for it, you have my word.

Sounds great, looking forward to a longer show, but it is sad to see the sleepy sunday show go. I left my computer on overnight so i'd have it freshly downloaded for my sleepy sunday mornings.

Count me in as one of those who couldn't squeeze the number of listens required into my week.

I'm glad to see you'll be going weekly, and I look forward to being able to keep up with the new shows!

Good luck, and welcome back to independance!

We've talked at length as we always do and you know that I support you and your decisions 100%, but I HATE the news that your not going to do the Sleepy Sunday show anymore. That might have bummed me out more then anything. *grin*

Your a stand up guy and a hell of a podcaster and there are great things ahead for you. I have no doubt about that.

Keep on doing what you do my friend!

i'm happy to know The Tartanpodcast is reverting back to independence! i've been an avid listener of podcasts since October2004 and placed links on my blog to some of my favs. sadly, been thinking about removing some of them because i find myself listening less and less often since some have been hooked by the Podshow organization and their original free-spirited vibe has been dissipating.

thanks for staying true to your ethics and purpose

The SSS was my favorite podcast, bar none. I'm not happy to see it go but I understand your situation. I prefer the tartanpodcast to be independant and if this is what it takes, that's OK. I would prefer however a shorter tartanpodcast and a SSS without a big time investment on your part (a few words about each song and the artist and go.) Just MHO. Thanks for the hard work and I'll keep listening.

Mark, i am extremely please to hear your obviously relaxed words. I am not a clever man by any means but your writing here seemed to flow with ease and therefore the sign of one chilled man.

You should know by now you have my up-most support and i know (as he was sitting next to me today) that you have 1 more listener as of yesterday.

TartanCast always smacked of independance and the news that you are free to put together you shows in comfort is great.

I was very surprised at your comment about people not being able to listen and that your shows lacked conviction. I have never been dissapointed.

Right daft geordie, stop babbling. Keep up the good work and i cant wait to hear the next cast. See you in June.

Mark,

It must have taken a lot of thought and guts to do what you've done. I completely support why you've done it. Personally, I've never noticed a drop in the quality of the show but I know that producing 3 shows a week must have taken so much time and effort that you could be spending other things (especially with the family).

You run an amazing show and I'm sure it will be what it needs to be...

Hi Mark,

I'm another of those who was getting behind with my listening to the TP, so I'm happy with your decision. I know how much time and effort goes into producing your shows and can understand that you have more important things going on in your life.

As far as losing out on advertising money or the chance to do this full-time - I wouldn't worry too much. You have a great "product" and I'm sure that those with the cash will recognise that - it just depends what business model you want to follow.

Keep up the great work!

Jack.

Hi Mark

One show a week makes it easier for me to keep up with all the podcasts I have to listen to - the tartanpodcast always gets no 1 priority so it's the others that have fallen behind!

Apart from that, the others have already said it. I'm with you all the way, whatever you do. Just remain true to yourself.

Hope to see you in June.

Clearly I am a neophyte at this posting comments stuff.

I thought I originally posted a comment with a typo thus the strange one liner.

What I wanted to post was:

Mark,
like the rest of your loyal fan base I appreciate whatever you choose to share with us. I could not enjoy the podcast knowing you felt stretched thin in your ability to provide quality as a podcaster, father and husband.

I would like to second Joel's idea of "a SSS without a big time investment on your part (a few words about each song and the artist and go.)" My family thoroughly enjoyed listening together as we ate our Sunday breakfasts (and, as I have mentioned to you before, Mark, my son Cameron enjoyed your son Cameron's occasional movie reviews --- but you gave me a very reasonable reason for discontinuing them.

Cheers Mark,

Love the show, you are one of the most genuine people that I have heard in a podcast. Sorry to see/hear you leave podshow, but now your show will be one of the ones that I eagerly await, as I do The Pill, Cush and Old wave radio.

Keep it Indy - that's what I dig about the podcast scene anyway. I wish you much success, podcasting and otherwise, and Saiorse (my favorite Irish work).

I appreciate your taking back control of your life and the tartanpodcast. It is not often in life that one can truely map his own voyage. Thank you, Mark, for remaining independant. A few sponsorship $s can not pay for the inevitable lack of freedom they would bring.

Mark - I'm sure you'll do just as well without Podshow, if not better. I'm glad you didn't have the Earthlink sponsorship anyway whilst it was running. If I hear it one more time I'll not be responsible for my actions. In fact, I'm seriously thinking of ditching some of my podcast listening because the ads are driving me spare. But that's another matter...

Children with ADHD

There is a perplexing state of affairs in today's society, there lies a strong correlation between the affluence of a society and the amount of disease that is present. There is also another correlation that troubles many a people and that is with affluence comes disease at an Earlier age.

Working with children and the parents of these children I often get asked the question, 'Why are Children with ADHD on the increase?'

The answer as you shall find is one that is both interesting and challenging.

Children of today are really no more different from the children of yesterday in terms of genetic makeup. However, if you examine the issue more closely you will tend to find that many children today have been given labels. For example, 'Oh, those are children with ADHD' or 'Those are the children who can't sit still.' Or 'That is the kid that always gets into trouble.'

These labels are not only destructive but also become a self fulfilling prophecy as it is repeated adnauseum.

So as a 21st century parent or a parent with a child with ADHD or a parent with children with ADHD, what knowledge framework do you need to equip yourself with to ensure your children live out their true potential?

Here is a quick reference list for thinking about ADHD
ADHD is a source of great frustration because it is misunderstood
ADHD medications are a great short term time buying device and should be avoided long term
The above point goes for any sort of drug consumption. Think about it for a minute. Unless you have a biochemical deficiency in your body like Type 1 diabetes where your body fails to produce enough insulin or any at all, why would you take an external drug? A body that is in balance is totally healthy. It is only when the body is out of balance that dis-ease symptoms start to creep up.
ADHD is a biochemical imbalance of the mind and body.
The Head of Psychiatry in Harvard states that drugs for ADHD simply mask the effects of ADHD. It does not cure ADHD. This is an important point because a cure implies never to have to take the medication. This means that once you start on medication you will have to be on it for the rest of your life i.e. you have medically acquired a dependency for a biochemical imbalance. That is like stuffing all your rubbish (problematic behaviors) into a closet (medication) where no one can see it. But if you continue to stuff more rubbish into that closet, one day you will not have enough space and need to do one of two things. You either empty the rubbish (the natural conclusion) or you get a bigger closet (i.e. change to stronger medication to control the symptoms). The choice is obvious but sometimes when you don't have the necessary tools to deal with ADHD you tend to think the bigger closet is the only option.
ADHD children are super sensitive to the emotions around them. Often they pick up emotional cues from their parents without realizing. Many parents come home frustrated or annoyed from work, the child with ADHD picks this up and starts to 'cause trouble' by becoming restless. Parents frustration increase because they just want some peace and quiet. They get angry which in turn is picked up by the child who then intensifies their activity. Things get way out of hand and some sort of punishment is handed down to the child who has no idea what just happened. The cycle repeats itself every so often.
Our brains are wired emotionally. Positive praise is interpreted as an analytical/thinking exercise. Negative criticism including scolding, name calling, physical punishment all go directly to the emotional brain of children with ADHD. This means in order to ensure you get your message across in the most optimal way, you need to learn how to communicate with your ADHD children the way they like to be communicated with.
Every negative comment requires 16 positive comments to neutralize the emotion. Save yourself the frustration and agitation by practicing positive communication.

The list is by no means complete. In dealing with children with ADHD there are a certain set of behavioural principles to follow. I will detail these steps in the coming weeks. I'll also build on the list as you continue to learn about what appears to be a mystical disorder known as 'Children with ADHD'
